The latest rising star to hit the North American fast-fashion retail scene, MNG by Mango churns out cutting-edge, yet affordable clothing that’s selling like hot cakes. Known for insanely accessible prices (nothing tops the $250 range) and daily deliveries, mixing and matching of-the-moment merchandise has never been easier. As if that’s not incentive enough to stock up, just wait ‘til you see what’s in store for summer: a mind-numbing selection of easy, breezy, balloon-hemmed dresses, high-waisted hot pants, mod mini-dresses with pop art prints (Hello, Jane Birkin!), white-washed straight-legged denim and equally edgy over-sized handbags, silver metallic sandals and chunky jewelry.

Don’t even think about proceeding to checkout until you’ve loaded up on the limited-edition Jovovich-Hawk line for MNG (co-created by top model/actress Milla Jovovich and design partner Carmen Hawk), a mouth-watering mélange of 10 key dresses for day and night, including a ‘60’s A-line mini, gold-print kimono, romantic maxi and ‘40’s-inspired cocktail concoction.

Attention New York shoppers! Soon, you’ll be able to experience this fashion frenzy firsthand when MNG by Mango makes its Manhattan debut with the opening of its SoHo flagship this fall. Until then, you’ll have to stock up online at www.mngshop.com or head out of town to any of their 900 brick-and-mortar locations worldwide.

Exclusive Deal Just For You! MNG by Mango is offering Fashion Junkie subscribers $20 off any online purchase of $100 or more from May 8, 2007 12:01 a.m. (EST) to May 23, 2007, 11:59 p.m. (EST). To redeem this special offer, simply go to Mngshop.com, make your selection and enter the voucher code 1FJFIX upon checkout. Happy shopping!

Fashion Junkie Factoid: The name “Mango” was chosen by the company’s founders when they visited the Philippines and tasted the namesake fruit for the first time. A mango represented exactly what they were looking for: something fresh and exotic. With an ultimate goal of opening Mango stores all over the world, this became the ideal name due to its easy pronunciation and universal translation.

Benelux Beckons: Amsterdam Fashion Week

Dara at Amsterdam Fashion Week’s opening bash.

There’s a booming fashion scene beyond New York, Paris, Milan and London. Case in point: Amsterdam International Fashion Week (AIFW) kicked-off their fifth season in July ‘06 at the ultra cool Westergasfabriek (a.k.a. former Gas Works).

a model strutting down the catwalk

Housed in a tented in-door space (a baby-sized version of New York’s Bryant Park), a bevy of international stylists, editors (including the Fashion Junkie) and buyers filled stadium seats to preview dozens of catwalk shows, seminars (100 years of Dutch Fashion), workshops, parties, film screenings, trade shows and fashion exhibitions. Some Dutch designers that should be on your radar screen: G-star, Mart Visser Collection, Hans Ubbink, Blue Blood, Percy Irausquin, Daryl van Wouw, Emily Hermans, Der Kommissar and Edwin.

The cool quotient continued with a week-long series of “Laundry Days” shopping events held at hip retail spots throughout the City. Participating shop window displays were decorated with funky Laundry Days logos and some of the latest Dutch fashion designs. For those who missed out on the scene, a free “Fashion Weekly” newspaper was distributed everywhere.

Benelux Beckons: Cora Kemperman

Dutch designer, Cora Kemperman, has been whipping up wearable works of art for the past decade. Famous for dramatic, multi-layered silhouettes like the signature (meter-wide) “falda” skirt, her frocks are fluid, feminine and frequently combined with Indian-infused elements like sequins, beaded embroidery and gold jacquards. Your best bets for the season: jet black bubble skirts, white blouses accented with ruffles, wide-legged, pin-striped pant suits and stunning Kimono-inspired tops. With stores solely in Belgium and the Netherlands, you’d be foolish to ponder over any purchase.
