Ready, Set… Shoe-Down!

There’s nothing like the life of an aspiring fashion designer. You’re constantly broke, desperate for press (Hello, Vogue!) and commonly snubbed by big wigs in the industry. But this can all change with the click of a mouse now that Steve Madden – one of the country’s leading footwear purveyors, is willing to give YOU your big break just by entering their exciting Art + Sole competition.

Ready to step into the spotlight? Create a killer pair of kicks for Steve Madden’s upcoming Fall or Winter collection, submit your design online by Monday, June 11, 2007 and pray you’re among the 5 finalists picked by Mr. Madden himself (umm… no pressure!). Just make sure to spread the word to your posse, since everyone can help Madden vote for the grand-prize winner on June 20, 2007.

As for the top finalist, they’ll be flown to New York to hob-knob with Steve Madden for a day at the company’s headquarters, receive $500 for a shoe shopping spree and watch their creation come to life. Plus, the winning soles will bear the designer’s name and be available for sale at stevemadden.com and retail locations across the country. Well, what are you waiting for… stop kvetching and start sketching!

Move over Madison Avenue, make way for Bleecker street – by far, the city’s chicest shopping strip. First came Marc Jacobs, then Cynthia Rowley, and now you can add Miguelina to the mix – a sleek, 900 square-foot shop filled with flirty ‘n feminine, resort-inspired frocks.

Miguelina Gambaccini, a self-taught designer launched her own label on a whim due to a lack of stylish clothes in her native Dominican Republic. Now based in Manhattan, this in-demand designer is adored for her signature blend of gauze tunics, silk camis with lace and flowing chiffon dresses, all available in a Caribbean-infused palette of turquoise, coral and canary yellow. While high-end retailers like Bergdorf’s and Fred Segal have been stocking the line since ’97, it wasn’t until this spring that Gambaccini set up a permanent home to showcase her entire collection.

Since jumping in on the Bleecker street bandwagon, fashionistas from everywhere have been going bonkers over Miguelina’s current collection, which includes stunning cropped coats, white linen eyelet skirts (our fave) and other exotic essentials. Gambaccini also scouts the globe for must-have accessories like metallic flat sandals, glitzy jewelry, over-sized handbags and luggage, all of which are available at the shop. For newlyweds, there’s a travel-friendly honeymoon line (everything’s lightweight and hand-washable) and Brazilian bikinis by Tara Matthews, one of the many co-branded items sold on a seasonal basis.

So the next time you’re headed on that getaway to Montauk or Mexico, make sure to put Miguelina on your packing list.

Balm Ambition

Bring out your inner goddess with Balmshell – 15 smooch-able high-shine glosses that are guaranteed to get you smiling and giggling. Inspired by a float art pen spotted at a posh Toronto shop, identical twins (and blond bombshells themselves), Fiona and Jenny Lees, ditched the corporate world two years ago to create a luxe lip-gloss line unlike anything on the market.

Formulated with an ultra moisturizing, non-sticky and slightly shimmery finish, Balmshell is unlike anything you’ve put on your pout. However… Balmshell’s real twist is in the packaging. Made from reusable float art designs, each tube of gloss uncovers a series of quirky sliding scenes depicting a day in the life of a fashionista. Swipe on Shopaholic, a sheer baby-pink gloss, then tilt the end of the tube to watch a woman walking into a store and leaving with a bag-carrying doorman in tow. Other shades you’ll be tempted to try include: Shoe Fetish (sheer hot fuchsia), Curse of the Purse (sheer peachy cream) and That’s So 80’s (retro mauve). There’s even a limited-edition assortment for brides-to-be, Today’s The Day (clear gloss), and hipster moms, Yummy Mummy (light mocha brown). Just don’t toss those tubes once the gloss is gone – each handle unscrews and reattaches to a cute keychain that’s included inside, so you can fawn over your favorite float art forever.

Having canvassed the smackers of beauty junkies from Great Britain to Canada, the Balmshell gals are living proof that blondes have brains, as well as more fun.

Available at Holt Renfrew stores across Canada, Selfridges & Co. throughout the U.K and Hendri Bendel in NYC. Shop online at balmshell.com to see all the funky float art designs in action!

Pin Head

Want a fast, effective and even fun way to remove wrinkles sans scalpel or syringe? Forget about pricey and passé fillers like Botox. Be bold my friends and go the natural route with cosmetic acupuncture – the hottest anti-ageing remedy du jour. A traditional Chinese medicine that’s been around for centuries to fend off disease and re-balance the body’s energy (qi), acupuncture (when administered regularly) actually banishes crows feet, frown lines and furrows (who knew?!). Just how does this magic manifest? With the flick of a Doctor’s wrist (trust us, only a trained professional should do the deed) dozens of little pricks are inserted into targeted areas on the face to increase circulation, relax deep creases and smooth out fine lines. While it looks more ghastly than gorgeous, the twenty-minute procedure is surprisingly painless and calming. Just don’t freak out… you will spot a few dabs of blood and temporary redness once the pins are removed. After a few regular sessions, you’ll look and feel fab.

No, that’s not the lead character from the horror flick Hellraiser pictured above. It’s yours truly test-driving the anti-ageing acupuncture treatment at Toronto’s Rapson Pain Clinic. Book a consultation with Doctor Yun Ye—the master of acupuncture. $100 for a consultation and $50 for additional appointments.

Rapson Pain Clinic • 600 Sherbourne Street, Suite 207, Toronto • 416-968-1366.
