Maybe it’s the kid in me, but I’ve never been a big proponent of those popular “How To Dress Your Age” magazine articles – too authoritative and limiting for my youthful taste. Having recently hit the big 4-0, I’m happily breaking “the rules” by donning mini skirts, bikinis (even after having twins) and dare I say, hot pants (better call the fashion police!) Full disclosure: I do have slight traces of cellulite and those dreaded spider veins. But… I do my best to keep it together with daily workouts and a heathy Mediterranean diet, save those early morning spoonfulls of Nutella. Given that gravity will eventually take its toll, I prefer to celebrate the skin I’m in today, rather than dwell on that dreadful birth certificate. Which reminds me, I’ll be celebrating yet another birthday in just 3 weeks! But I digress…
Because of this ageless philosophy, I have absolutely no intention of putting the kibosh on playful pieces that a Millennial might wear, including this season’s de rigueur romper. Take for instance, this vintage-inspired masterpiece from Lover (a.k.a. the Eternity) – a cult Aussie label you’re bound to see a lot more of. At first glance the shorts seemed a tad, well… short. But once I tried it on, the drape-y nylon fabric magically hit my derriere in all the right places. Rejoice – cellulite be gone!
Having spotted a plethora of jumpsuits at my favorite e-boutiques (Shopbop, Intermix and Net-A-Porter, to name a few), Lover’s ultra flattering and feminine silhouette is the only one that stands out. I’m loving its punchy cobalt color (black is so blasé), sexy mesh back, two-toned lace bodice and Victorian-inspired ruffled neckline. Plus, a piece this versatile can easily be worn day or night. While a tad steep at $565, the quality and craftmanship alone is worth the investment. Given that I’m a Mompreneur with a hectic lifestyle, I’ll confidently be sporting mine on the playground with 3-year old toddlers in tow. As the legendary Cosmopolitan Editor, Helen Gurley Brown once said, you’re never too old to wear what you love.
For those of you who are over 40, I’m curious: are you an advocate of ageless style? Do you push the boundaries by wearing bikinis, hot pants, jumpsuits and hip-length hair?
